Computer Viruses Can Harm Your PC
Every time you sit down in front of your computer you are potentially opening the door for viruses to infect your system. Emails, attachments, and instant messages can all be carrying a virus that has the potential to harm and infiltrate your computer system.
How You Get Computer Viruses
A computer virus is inside (or attached) to a file or program. Typically, the computer virus is not activated until you run the program or start the software that contains the virus.
Viruses are created by computer experts that work hard to damage your system. Computer viruses have the potential to delete important files, erase your hard drive, corrupt programs, and leave you with random messages or sounds. Most viruses become well-known for their names and what havoc they create.
It is important to remember that some viruses can go undetected. Not every virus will immediately tell you that it has infiltrated your computer. In most cases, individuals work on their system without knowing a virus is present and causing hidden damage.
How You Can Protect Against Computer Viruses
The best way you can protect yourself against computer viruses is to understand how they reach your system. Email is becoming one of the most well-know carrier of computer viruses. If you receive an email from a stranger and/or a friend you should be cautious of any attachments. Although your friends may not mean to forward a virus they could easily do so without knowing it. A virus can easily generate an email supposedly from a friend and send it directly to you.
You should also be cautious with any instant messages. If you receive an instant message from someone you do not know, do not open it! The extension of the file can help you determine if it is safe to open, but there is not one rule that any extension is safe. Some hackers use more common extensions including .txt or .jpg in hopes that you feel it is a safe file to open. Some of the more obvious virus extensions can include .exe and .bat.
There are many small everyday steps you can take to avoid computer viruses in addition to the steps mentioned above. You can avoid any unnecessary software downloads, pop-up window links, document downloads, and most importantly install some type of anti-virus software program.
Software to Protect Against Computer Viruses
An anti-virus software program is your best ally in the fight against viruses, malware, and spyware. You should protect yourself against online threats. An anti-virus software program can offer you many benefits including, but not limited to virus detection, real time scans, and virus removal. These types of systems range in price and features. Some anti-virus programs are offered at no cost (freeware) while others will cost you a one time or annual fee.
Before you choose and purchase an anti-virus program you should determine the level of support and protection you need on a daily basis. Also take into consideration if you have already been infected with a virus.
